Before you begin
Renewing your dealer’s licence and endorsements
Dealer’s licences are valid for 12 months.
Endorsements are valid until:
- your dealer’s licence expires or is surrendered or revoked
- your endorsement is surrendered or revoked.
We recommend you apply for a new licence (and any endorsements) 4 months before your licence expires. If you apply for a new one before your current dealer’s licence expires, your business can continue as usual until you get a decision about your new application. Your new licence starts on the date of this decision.
How much it costs
- New or renewed dealer licence – $204
- Dealer gun show consent – $50
- One or more endorsements, applied for at the same time – $204
These fees include GST and are not refundable. If you apply through MyFirearms you can pay using a credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard). You will be charged a card surcharge of 1.9%.
Apply online through MyFirearms

What is MyFirearms?
MyFirearms is our online portal that lets you provide information for the Firearms Registry and apply for and manage your firearms licensing.
What is RealMe?
RealMe login is a service from the New Zealand government that lets you use one username and password to access a wide range of services online.
If you do not have a RealMe login already, you’ll be prompted to create one before you start your application. You do not need a RealMe verified identity.
Step 1: Log in
Visit MyFirearms and log in with RealMe. You’ll need your mobile phone to carry out the security check.
Step 2: Create your MyFirearms profile
To use MyFirearms, you must first create a MyFirearms profile.
You need to provide your name, date of birth and the details of your New Zealand firearms licence.
A MyFirearms profile is unique to each person. It will be linked to your firearms licence, so you do not need to provide these details again when using MyFirearms.
Step 3: Complete the Dealer's Licence form
Select 'Dealer’s Licence' and complete the form.
If needed, complete the endorsements section of the form as well.
Step 4: Pay the fee
You can pay online with Visa or Mastercard. You will be charged a card surcharge of 1.9%.
Note: When you apply online, you must pay the application fee in MyFirearms. Do not pay the application fee at an NZ PostShop.
Step 5: Submit your application
Review the summary, then submit the form. You’ll receive an email to confirm we’ve received your application.
