The government has proposed new legislation to change the oversight of shooting clubs and ranges.
More information about the proposed Arms (Shooting Clubs, Shooting Ranges, and Other Matters) Amendment Bill is on the Parliament website here.
Operators and users of shooting clubs and shooting ranges should be aware that the law has not yet changed. The current requirements of Part 6 of the Arms Act and Parts 5 and 6 of the Arms Regulations still apply to clubs and ranges.
This legal framework is designed to promote the safe possession and use of firearms, and to ensure those who use firearms act in the interests of personal and public safety.
More information about the current framework for clubs and ranges is on our website here.
There is a formal process to go through before the final shape of the legislation is agreed by the whole Parliament and enacted as law, expected sometime around the middle of 2025, subject to Parliamentary timeframes.
During this period of change, Te Tari Pūreke will continue to help the firearms community do the right thing. We will continue to ensure shooting clubs and ranges are engaged, educated and encouraged to keep meeting legal obligations to keep their users and local communities safe.
We remain focused on helping to make our communities safer by regulating the lawful possession and use of firearms.
