The government has announced details of the review of the Firearms Registry.
This review is being carried out by the Ministry of Justice during 2024. Any recommendations for change would require the approval of Cabinet in 2025.
Te Tari Pūreke, Firearms Safety Authority will contribute to the review of the Firearms Registry and has an important role to support the Government’s law and order priorities.
Firearms licence holders must continue to comply with their legal obligations during this time. The law has not changed. This means you must continue to enter and update details in the Registry when you have an activating circumstance.
The Firearms Registry remains an essential law and order tool and gives confidence to Police and the community that we are mitigating the risk of firearms falling into the wrong hands.
During the review period, we will continue a strong focus on educating and engaging with firearms licence holders to help you do the right thing. We remain focused on helping to make our communities safer by regulating the lawful possession and use of firearms.
